A pub serving healthy vegan foods! Hobgoblin【Roppongi, Akasaka, Shibuya】

Pubs often serve only junk food. Can you imagine that you have vegan foods with a paint of beer in pub?

A British pub “Hobgoblin” has started serving vegan foods since this April! Drinkers talk a lot about this pub where they can enjoy drinks over healthy foods.

We had an interview with Hobgoblin Japan representative, Mark Spenser for this article. He talked about its vegan menu and specialty, draft cider.

Authentic British Pub deploying three branches in Japan!

The Hobgoblin is a UK based pub chain. It has been operated in Japan since 2000.

“The first branch was opened in Akasaka. Then we opened the second one in Roppongi in 2002 and then the third one in Shibuya in 2004. Currently we operate three branches in Tokyo”

It receives a lot of foreign customers and has a real British pub atmosphere. Various liquors displayed behind the counter make us excited!

There is a space near the entrance for those who want to casually drink without seating.

In the back, there are tables for those who want to enjoy drinking while seating and relaxing.

“There are many foreign customers in the standing space and at the counter seats. Many Japanese customers tend to take a seat and drink” said Mark.

A half of their customers are foreign people. You can enjoy drinks in a multinational atmosphere.

Just for your information, the tables in the back are no-smoking and the standing space is smoking area.

Enjoy the healthy vegan and veggie foods with a paint of beer

The Hobgoblin has started serving vegan foods since this April. Before April only vegetarian foods were available.

However as many customers asked to serve vegan foods, they decided to put vegan foods in the standard menu.

“It is easy to spot those foods with ‘V (vegetarian)’ and ‘VG (vegan)’ in our menu. I hope more customers discover that we are serving vegetarian and vegan foods.”

This is “The Veggie Burger (1,200 yen incl. tax)”. The patty is “falafel” which is a typical Middle East food and is deep-fried bean paste mixed with spices.

Thus compared with usual meat patties, it is very healthy. It is well seasoned and surely makes non-vegetarian people satisfied.

This burger is available only in the Roppongi branch! (Other menus are available in all three branches, Akasaka, Roppongi and Shibuya.)

This is “Vegetarian Chilli Nachos (1,400 yen incl. tax)”.

You can choose your favourite cheese from among normal cheese and vegan cheese (vegan cheese, extra 200 yen is required). We tasted it with vegan cheese this time.

The vegan cheese has also rich taste! The spicy chilli makes us drink more.

And, here is another vegetarian dish! “Margherita (1,500 yen incl. tax)”.

You can also choose your favourite cheese from among normal cheese and vegan cheese (vegan cheese, extra 200 yen is required). Needless to say, we chose vegan cheese this time.

Look just like usual pizza Margherita and actually taste, too. Crispy thin dough is very delicious!

The texture of pizza is perfect for a drink. Even if you can eat cheese, vegan cheese is recommended because it is healthier.

In the pizza menu, you can choose vegan cheese as a topping with extra 200 yen.

Enjoy vegan menu in the next door sport bar!

There is a sport bar next to the Roppongi branch. Actually this sport bar is also operated by the Hobgoblin.

”Hobgoblin is a British pub. The next door sport bar, ‘Legends SPORTS BAR & GRILL’ is an American style restaurant.

As you can have drinks and meals at the terrace seats, especially in this time of the year, they are busy with many guests.

When it was a day of American football match, a lot of customers enjoy the match with drinks!”

“Legends SPORTS BAR & GRILL” also serves vegetarian and vegan foods. Enjoy watching a sport with healthy foods!
